So it has reached that time of year again, when each morning I awake and start a fire in the wood stove. We only burn for the morning, then let the coals die down as the sun hits the south-facing windows, say 10:30 or so.
The cold weather makes it slightly more enticing to sit inside and fiddle with my computer, although I'd pretty much always rather be outdoors. But as the sun and the new moon are setting almost simultaneously and my kids are in bed, I thought I'd write a bit.....
My tech journey has been pretty uneventful. I installed the new Mac OS X, the Lion (Rawr!). It has some cool new features I am just learning how to use. Mostly, I like the faster everything. Downloading, web surfing, file saving, etc. are so much quicker! And the iCloud is cool. I'm still not sure how it all works, but somehow everything syncs when I am not looking. It's like Star Trek but without the goofy outfits.
So take care out there in techie land and enjoy the waning autumn. I look forward to seeing y'all in a couple of weeks!
You are so lucky to have a wood stove! We used to have one in our old house, and I loved it -- it is so much cozier than our current gas fire. I also like the whole stacking and hauling in wood part. Good exercise!
ReplyDeleteI have downloaded Lion and am set to install, but was waiting as I wanted first to make some videos using Camtasia Relay, and our IT folks said Camtasia Relay doesn't work with Lion. But then this past weekend I tried to do a Camtasia video and it kept crashing anyway, so I am going to take the Leap to Lion as soon as I have backed up my computer. I gather Lion is a really dramatic improvement over Snow Leopard, so I'm eager to try it, and to be able to use iCloud.
Great job with the Take a Stand Rally by the way!
I grew up with wood heat. I didn't like it because we had to haul wood all the time. I grew up in a really old house and lived in the far north room, had no floor vents like my brother's! But now I look back, it was such a cozy heat -
ReplyDeleteA few years ago I was talking with a friend of mine about how much I love the convenience of my natural gas/hot water heat at my lovely house in the city....I turn up the thermostat and magically the place warms up very fast. I love it and feel very fortunate to come home to a nice warm place with relatively low heating bills....few and far between have been the nights that my daughter has complained of being cold....but...in getting the convenience and comfort of this modern heat, I have sacrificed something, whether I realized it at the time or not...I have sacrificed the stories and experiences that come from gathering wood. We too had wood heat growing up and I loathed going out and hauling wood, stacking wood, etc. It was cold, hard work and it seemed most nights our home was still freezing no matter how fueled we kept the fire. But it gave me stories, memories and a skill set that my daughter will not naturally acquire by going to the hallway and turning the thermostat up. She will not value the comfort of a warm home in the same way I do, because she has never known what it is like to live in a home that is so cold the babies have to be kept upstairs for most of the winter. Kinda makes me wonder what else she is missing out on....hmmm.
ReplyDeleteOn the tech front, this Lion stuff sounds pretty cool! I think I might have to check that out and so does the Cloud...anything with the word cloud in the name has got to be cool!
